iPhone Duo Cases With Hinge Protection That Don't Block the Screen
Last updated . We have not tested these cases ourselves. Findings come from the reviewers linked on each point.
Hinge protection sounds like an easy win, but WSJ Buy Side found a catch with early iPhone Duo cases: when the phone is open, the hinge bumper has to go somewhere, and it usually ends up over the front display. That covers nearly half an inch of the screen plus the thumbnail button and depth control on the left edge. So the real question is which cases cover the hinge without doing that.

Our picks (based on published tests)
Best hinge cover that leaves the screen alone
JETech Vegan Leather Case with Hinge Protection
This back shell covers the side of the hinge and has no front frame, so nothing sits on the display or the left-edge controls. That's the cleanest answer we've found so far.
- Back shell only: no front frame and no adhesive strips, so it comes off whenever you like. (case-tester.com)
- Hinge is covered at the side; the shell folds back against the phone by itself. (case-tester.com)
- MagSafe held 1.84 kg on case-tester.com's pull gauge, the strongest of the US-available cases tested. (case-tester.com)
- Because nothing sits on the front, a screen protector works without trouble. (case-tester.com)
- Downsides: protects the back only, no inner lining, frame stays exposed. (case-tester.com)
- Amazon listing states: back cover with hinge protection only; front cover and screen protector NOT included. (Amazon product listing)
Attachment: No adhesive: back shell only, comes off whenever you like (case-tester.com)

Best rugged hinge cover
dbrand Grip Case for iPhone Duo
Popular Mechanics' most rugged pick has a simple elastic hinge cover. Nobody has reported yet whether it overlaps the display when open.
- Popular Mechanics' 'Most Rugged' pick: dedicated hinge and camera-bump covers, grippy texture all around. (Popular Mechanics)
- Its hinge cover has no small metal parts, which Popular Mechanics says makes it less likely to fail over time. Downside: no stand. (Popular Mechanics)
- dbrand describes the hinge cover as a single strip of elastic polymer that opens like a door, springs back on its own and is held shut by magnets (manufacturer description). (dbrand)

Most coverage (manufacturer claims)
OtterBox Defender Series Pro XT for iPhone Duo
OtterBox says its articulating hinge folds flat when open. This is a manufacturer claim that our sources haven't independently checked.
- OtterBox claims 4x military-standard drop testing (MIL-STD-810G 516.6), port covers, and a hinge guard that lays flat when the phone is open. These are manufacturer claims. (Amazon product listing)
- iplocation.net calls it the best for full coverage, with bulk as the trade-off. (iplocation.net)

If screen overlap is a deal-breaker
WSJ's two recommendations both skip hinge protection to avoid the problem: the ZAGG Crystal Palace Lite and the Spigen Nano Pop MagFit. See them on the under-$50 page and the rugged page.

Note: case-tester.com reports Spigen's Tough Armor Pro, which had full hinge coverage, has been pulled from Spigen's US line-up.
