Do You Need Hinge Protection on an iPhone Duo Case? Pros, Cons & Picks
Last updated . We have not tested these cases ourselves. Findings come from the reviewers linked on each point.
Short answer: a hinge cover is worth having if your phone tends to land on its spine, but it is not free. Covers add bulk, and on many early cases the cover ends up over part of the outer display when the phone is open. Apple's own advice is about keeping the hinge clean, which is a separate problem that a cover doesn't solve on its own.
What Apple says about the hinge
Apple's handling guide for the iPhone Duo asks owners to keep sand and grit away from the hinge and to make sure the hinge is clean before opening the phone (Apple Support). Apple doesn't say anything for or against hinge covers.
The case for a hinge cover
- case-tester.com points out that the hinge side is the part that takes the hit when the phone lands on its spine (case-tester.com).
- Popular Mechanics picked the dbrand Grip as its most rugged case partly because it covers the hinge and the camera bump (Popular Mechanics).
- Spigen says the spring hinge on its Air Fit Pro keeps the hinge enclosed at all times (manufacturer claim, Amazon listing).
The case against (or the trade-offs)
- Screen overlap. WSJ Buy Side found hinge bumpers on early cases can cover nearly half an inch of the outer display and the left-edge controls when the phone is open. Our hinge cover guide sorts cases by that problem.
- Grit. A cover sits right next to the hinge, the spot Apple says to keep clean. Owners report grit collecting under some covers. That's not something our sources tested, so treat it as a reason to clean under the cover now and then rather than as a verdict.
- Bulk and moving parts. Designs differ: springs and pins (Spigen), a single elastic strip held shut by magnets (dbrand, per dbrand), or a fixed side cover on a back shell (JETech, per case-tester.com). Popular Mechanics notes the dbrand design has no small metal parts to wear out.
If you want a hinge cover
| Case | Hinge coverage | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| JETech Vegan Leather Case with Hinge Protection | Yes (side of hinge) | Check price on Amazon |
| TORRAS Q3 Spin Case with 360° Magnetic Stand | Yes (dedicated hinge protection) | Check price on Amazon |
| dbrand Grip Case for iPhone Duo | Yes (one-piece elastic polymer hinge) | See it at dbrand.com |
| Spigen Air Fit Pro MagFit | Yes (spring hinge fully encloses hinge, per Spigen) | Check price on Amazon |
| Spigen Ultra Hybrid Pro MagFit | Yes (spring hinge mechanism) | Check price on Amazon |
| OtterBox Defender Series Pro XT for iPhone Duo | Yes (articulating hinge, lays flat when open, per OtterBox) | Check price on Amazon |
| ZAGG Crystal Palace Clear Case with Stand | Yes (hinge cover, per Popular Mechanics) | Check price on Amazon |
Our top pick here is the JETech Vegan Leather Case with Hinge Protection: it covers the hinge at the side and has no front frame, so nothing sits on the display (case-tester.com). The Smartish Gripmunk also wraps the hinge and, according to Smartish, uses six magnets to keep the case snug when folded (Smartish; not reviewed by our core sources). If you'd rather skip it
| Case | Hinge | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| ZAGG Crystal Palace Lite | No | Check price on Amazon |
| Spigen Nano Pop MagFit | No (open hinge design) | Check price on Amazon |
| PITAKA Aramid Fiber Case (Caseless Feeling) | No | Check price on Amazon |
| Apple iPhone Duo Case | No (hinge exposed when closed, per Popular Mechanics) | Check price on Amazon |
WSJ's two recommendations both skip the hinge cover, which is how they avoid the screen-overlap problem (WSJ Buy Side). If you go this way, Apple's cleaning advice matters more, not less.
How to decide
- Do you drop your phone a lot, or carry it loose in a bag?
- Get a hinge cover. Start with the rugged guide.
- Do you use the left-edge controls or want the full outer screen?
- Pick a cover that doesn't overlap the display (see this guide), or skip the cover.
- Do you work around sand or dust?
- Whatever you choose, follow Apple's advice and check the hinge is clean before opening.
