Does the Apple iPhone Duo Case Use Adhesive? Removal, Residue & Reapplying
Last updated . We have not tested these cases ourselves. Findings come from the reviewers linked on each point.
Yes. Apple's two-piece iPhone Duo Case sticks to the phone with adhesive strips on both the front and back pieces. Apple's own setup guide tells you to peel the adhesive liners and press the edges down. That surprised buyers who expected a magnetic fit, because Apple's product listing talks about built-in magnets, which are there for MagSafe (PetaPixel).
What Apple says
- Put the phone outer-display-up on a clean, flat surface, free of dust.
- Peel the adhesive liners from the inside of the case.
- Fit the front cover first, lining up the top-right and bottom-right corners, then press the remaining edges with gentle, even pressure.
- Fit the back cover starting from the top edge by the camera, then press the other edges.
- The phone then prompts you to turn on Shift Left Edge (Settings > Display & Brightness), which moves outer-display content clear of the front piece.

Quick facts
- Material: polycarbonate, not silicone (some early coverage called it silicone). Colors: Sand and Navy Blue (MacRumors).
- Hinge: not covered (Popular Mechanics, PetaPixel).
- Spare strips: none in the box, according to case-tester.com.
- Fit: sources disagree. case-tester.com's unit didn't seat around the camera and its front frame overlapped part of the display; Popular Mechanics reported a perfect fit.
Removal and residue
PetaPixel's editor-in-chief found the adhesive area small and not aggressively sticky: it came off without trouble and the little residue left behind wiped off easily (PetaPixel). Apple hasn't published removal instructions that we could find, so go slowly, start at an edge, and don't pry with anything metal.
Can you reapply it?
Apple doesn't say. Reviewers expect the strips to hold less well once removed (case-tester.com, PetaPixel), and Apple includes no spares. We couldn't confirm that Apple sells replacement strips, so we don't claim it does. If you expect to take the case off often, consider an adhesive-free design instead.
Alternatives without adhesive
Apple's own Apple iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand attaches with magnets only (MacRumors, case-tester.com). See every confirmed option in iPhone Duo cases without adhesive.

- Two pieces, front cover and back cover, each attached with adhesive: Apple's setup steps say to peel the adhesive liners, then press the edges with gentle, even pressure. (Apple Support)
- After the back cover goes on, the phone prompts you to turn on Settings > Display & Brightness > Shift Left Edge, which moves outer-display content to make room for the front piece. (Apple Support)
- Made of polycarbonate (not silicone), in Sand and Navy Blue; it protects the back, camera area and the outer-display surround, not the inside when unfolded. (MacRumors)

Apple's adhesive-free option
Apple iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand
Magnetic only. Takes a screen protector, but the frame is exposed and its MagSafe hold is the weakest case-tester.com measured.
- Attaches purely by magnets, front and back; takes a screen protector without issue; microfibre lining. (case-tester.com)
- Frame is fully exposed, and MagSafe hold measured 0.88 kg, which case-tester.com says rules out a car mount. (case-tester.com)
- Popular Mechanics' 'Best Folio' pick; it notes magnet-only attachment isn't as secure as a snap-on case in a heavy drop. (Popular Mechanics)
- WSJ cautions that folio-style cases block either the outer display or the main cameras; you can't use both at once. (WSJ Buy Side)
Attachment: Magnetic only, front and back; no adhesive (case-tester.com, MacRumors)
